The Story

In the reminiscent setting of the early last century, Antonio Esposito, after working at the renowned Villa Floridiana in the Vomero district of Naples, returned to Capri, turning his passion for botany into a profession as a gardener at Villa Discopoli owned by Baroness Gudrun UexKull. In gratitude for his services, the baroness assigned him a modest house adjacent to the Villa, a refuge that Antonio proudly named 'La Floridiana'

The Neapolitan experience inspired Antonio to embark on a new business venture, becoming a nurseryman and florist. This new enterprise flourished rapidly, and between 1908 and 1923, Antonio and his wife Virginia had seven children: three boys, Luigi, Mario, Antonio, and four girls, Teresa, Maria, Virginia, and Venere.

1924 brought a significant change when Baroness Gudrun Uexkull sold the house to Antonio for a modest sum, thanks to the intervention of Axel Munthe.

Over the years, Antonio's second son, Mario, led the gradual transformation of Villa La Floridiana into a hotel, intertwining the history of the gardener Antonio Esposito with that of Capri. Mario, with his special talents, became a pioneer in bringing groups of tourists from all over Europe, promoting La Floridiana and the island itself through international travel agencies. In the 1960s, the President of the Italian Republic, Giovanni Leone, recognized Mario's merits by conferring upon him the title of Knight of Labour for his contribution to the development of Italian tourism.

Crucial to the growth of the establishment was the presence of Michelina, Mario's wife, whose love for cooking led to the discovery of Caprese delicacies by guests from all over the world.

Today, the descendants of Antonio Esposito continue with dedication on the path laid by their predecessors. Keeping the history of La Floridiana alive and contributing to the tradition of hospitality and success in Capri.
